Ærøfærgerne A/S was established on May 1st, 2002 and is 100% owned by the Aeroe municipality.  On April 1st. 2011 surpassed Ærøfærgerne from being a public company to be directly under Aeroe municipality.

The primary purpose of the company is the operation of ferry services between the islands of Aeroe and Funen, Langeland, and Als. The company is in charge of the following four ferry services:

Søby - Fynshav with the ferry "M/F Skjoldnæs", Søby - Faaborg with the ferry "M/F Søbyfærgen", Ærøskøbing - Svendborg with the ferry "M/F Ærøskøbing", Marstal - Rudkøbing with the ferry "M/F Marstal".

The Aeroe municipality sets the prices and timetables. Ærøfærgerne A/S runs the ferry service.

95% of the staff lives in the Aeroe island.

Ærøfærgerne runs the catering service on board the ships.
